Le Barong :Informal fusion makes for laid back lounging
by: Emma Kwee

Bistro Le Barong is located at Jalan Pantai Kuta, a bustling street right in the center of Kuta. With a slogan that reads 'A little jewel in town for good foods and tired legs, certainly a trip worth spent', you will find this quaint little joint as the perfect respite after your busy day in Bali.

  • The Vibe
Although small in size, the use of high ceiling and open-front entrances gives the bistro a feeling of much-needed space. And despite its seemingly outdated décor, this intentional with the manager Debbie wanted to recapture that lost Balinese spirit. While most places give in to the concept of modern minimalism, the bistro plays up with life-size oil paintings of Balinese women on the walls. They may not be expensive but they do convey what authentic Bali lifestyle was like in the past. These touches give the guests a chance to relax in an atmosphere that is authentically Balinese.

  • The Food
The menu is fairly compact and offers a fusion of Western and Balinese dishes. The starter of the Thai Pumpkin Soup ( Rp 15,000) is a tad too sweet for our tooth but, the rest of the dishes definitely surpassed expectations. The Sate Languan (Rp. 18,000) is a real treat. A Balinese specialty of fish sate with lemongrass, the dish is fresh from the grill and well-balanced in flavour. The best seller, Balinese nasi campur (Rp. 25,000), is a good filled plate full of rice with several tasty side dishes such as tofu, sate, rendang and different vegetables. Also recommended is the 'Chicken dancing wrap'(Rp. 28,000) a Mexican tortilla filled with marinated chicken, avocado and lettuce. It's a crispy and light lunch snack, that's not too filling. Price wise bistro Le Barong is quite economical. Starters range from 15 to 20 thousand rupiah whereas main courses will set you back only 25 to 50 thousand rupiah. Pretty decent if you take into account that portions are large and the food, tasty.

  • The Service
The staff is helpful and obviously proud of their place and the dishes. They tend to ask every customer's opinion about the food, which show that they care about their needs and wants. Don't expect any stiff upper lip waiters dressed in black in this place, that is not in style with Le Barong's food and atmosphere.

Le Barong also offers spa treatments for those who don't only want to satisfy their stomach. Massages, facials, manicures and so on are available on the second floor. Other than that the space can cater for any kind of anniversary, with special packages available for minimally 10 people.

The SD Food Advisor's take on Le Barong
To wrap it all up Le Barong is a casual relaxed place to catch up with friends. The atmosphere is intimate, especially at night, not too bright, not too dark, or as the Indonesians call it: remang remang. Fit for laidback lounging at a friendly fare, Le Barong might well be a worthwile option when you find yourself walking on your last legs through the crowded traffic infested roads of Kuta .
