Adam Air Flight
by: Emma Kwee

Adam Air is one of the many low cost airlines that have popped up in the Indonesian skies in recent years. With over a thousand islands and neighboring countries that are in majority water locked, it is only logical that the low-cost airline business is booming. Adam Air, owned by the only 24-year old Mr. Adam Suherman offers basic flights; no eccentric thrills, no expensive bills. Transportation that was formerly only attainable for rich, is now made more economical.

Prices for flights vary depending on how far in advance you book them and the demand. It's best to check prices and availability about two weeks before departure. Prior to that many tour operators don't even have the flights in their computer system yet. You can book up to a few hours before take off, but prices will be higher and availability is a matter of luck. Early morning or late night flights tend to be a lot cheaper too, but involve tiring hours in a comatose state at the airport and difficulty in finding transportation to and from the airport. Be warned that on festival days, of which there are many in Indonesia, prices skyrocket and flights fill up weeks ahead. Flights can also be booked online at http://www.flyadamair.com

Also, be prepared for announcements of delays. However, once the airplane has been prepped, boarding goes on smooth as silk and within 15 minutes all passengers are strapped into their seats. The somewhat tired-looking crew, dressed in not too flattering bright orange outfits, manages to smile faintly while routinely going through the safety demonstration. Before you know it, the airbus speeds its way to the runway.

The seating arrangements inside the aircraft are not particularly spacious with two rows of three seats crammed over the width of the plane, and providing leg room as well doesn't seem to be the company's main aim. Luckily, the flights don't take long and with the only entertainment in the seat pocket being an orange puke bag and a safety regulation card, taking a nap seems a tempting option. No money is wasted on onboard entertainment systems, in-flight programs and individual television screens. Adam Air keeps it simple and does what planes do best: flying.

During the flight, water cups with straws are handed out and, unlike its competitors in the low cost market segment, Adam Air also provides a small cardboard box containing a little cake and chocolate filled bread. After this unexpected snack, the journey is already coming to an end. Barely fit for a cat's nap, you already covered over a thousand kilometers in a time that won't even get you from the airport to jamming downtown Jakarta!

All in all Adam Air does what it promises: It gets you around as fast as possible as economically as possible. For those who couldn't care less about eating a 4-course airplane meal with 'real' knife and fork, but would rather save their money to go dine at a 4-star restaurant once they arrive at their destination, Adam air is a smart solution. It will enable you to board a Boeing without going bankrupt.
