Kopi Selasar
by: Emma Kwee

Kopi Selasar is a cafe situated in the cool mountainous hills of Dago in the North of Bandung. The cafe is part of the Selasar Sunaryo art space, created by the artist of the same name in 1998. After sniffing the inspirational art that is displayed in the gallery, soon our noses lead us to the delightful café, with views of the hills and a menu that features coffee in all shapes and sizes.

  • The Vibe
Being part of a gallery, the layout of Kopi Selasar is as beautifully designed as one might expect. The interior, or more accurately exterior, is modern yet totally in balance with the surroundings of the green Dago hills. A lot of organic materials have been used in for example picnic style tables of thick wood and cozy benches facing the hills. The trees that grow in the middle of the courtyard have not been torn down but are instead a focal point, their green leaves forming a natural roof that permit just enough sunlight to not burn your scalp. The sound of small water streams adds an edge of natural serenity, as do the glass windscreens that do not hinder the magnificent view of the surroundings.
  • The Drinks
The menu consists of a dazzling array of coffees. Hot and cold, from the strongest espresso to the creamiest latte. The best seller, Selasar coffee (Rp 18,000), is a delicate blend of coffee with fresh ground ginger and, steamed milk and foam. Very tasty and yet not too overpowering as ginger sometimes has the habit of overshadowing other flavors. Also delicious is the Coffee flavored (Rp 22,000), coffee mixed with a choice of either amaretto, vanilla, caramel or chocolate, topped off with whipped cream. The favorite of the day however is a tiramisu smoothie (Rp 30,000), an inventive delight consisting of many sinful ingredients, such as espresso, kahlua, mascarpone cheese, yoghurt, coffee ice cream and a dollup of whipped cream. Other than coffee, the menu also has small snacks such as french fries and sandwiches on offer, but to be honest, the coffee was all that was needed to make this cultural coffee mix most satisfying.
  • The service
The cafe is ran by several young women, who mastered the coffee mixing to the max. Most of the visitors seem to be either students of arts or couples on a romantic date. Therefore, the air the place breathes is fresh and young, not a stuffy museum feel at all, but a modern edge fit for all ages as long as young of heart.

SD's personal take on Kopi Selasar at Selasar Sunaryo art space
This is a place with a concept that offers a unique combination of relaxation and art taxation. The atmosphere is very welcoming and it is striking how well the natural surroundings of the Dago hills are highlighted by the construction and implementation of organic materials. Although prices are quite steep, a visit to the free gallery evens out the expense. Kopi Selasar is one of those places where you would just bring a good book and sit down till the sun sets while your coffee cools.
