» Student Canteen
Student Canteen
by: Emma Kwee
One advantage of having a large number of students in Bandung is the abundance of cheap and tasty warungs that it brings with it. Students in Bandung are generally always short on cash but their appetites keep growing. This would explain the sprouting of cheap but delicious eating places that could prove to be a life saver to the locals and travelers on a budget. A good example would be Kantin A.A which is located on a side road at Jalan Dipatiukur, just before simpang (crossroads) Dago
  • The Vibe
Kantin A.A derived its name from the visiting students. Both sons of the owners have names starting with the letter A, thus A.A is formed. As with any other typical canteen, function supersedes style so the place is fashioned to fit as many students as possible at the same time. Wooden benches, large communal tables and a self service buffet occupy this establishment. Lunch hour at Kantin A.A looks like a Justin Timberlake concert. It is absolutely packed with students from the nearby computer college and the
Unpad University faculty. The chatter and banter makes for a lively environment and the fast eating pace of most customers is almost inhuman.
  • The Food
Grab a plate and queue in line for the rice cookers at the left. Take as much rice as you like or think you can handle. Then it's time for the good stuff. The various dishes are placed in buffet style and the variety is enormous. There's
tempe, tahu, egg, chicken and a wide variety of vegetables. Since there's a constant coming and going of customers, food runs out fast and is replaced even faster so it's always fresh and hot. It's hard to choose between all the delicious dishes but the notable dishes worth trying is the nangka and the tempe mendoan. The nangka is a very scrumptious dish with an almost meat-like texture. On the other hand, the tempe mendoan consists of strips of sotbean coated in batter and deep fried which gives it its addictively crispy texture. Another great feature on the menu is the absolutely delicious fresh fruit juices. The Mango juice and the Avocado juice come highly recommended and all juices are reasonably priced at Rp. 3000. Price wise, Kantin A.A is unbelievably cheap you’ll feel like you’re ripping them off. A filled up plate will probably set you back about Rp.5000. Peanuts for such quality and freshness of its offerings. It truly beats the more up market establishments.
  • The Service
Service is mostly in your own hands. The advantage is that you can take whatever you like, whenever you like and however much you like. The service staff is mostly occupied with running around frantically with drinks orders and cleaning up tables.
SD's personal take on kantin A.A.
As a low budget eatery, Kantin A.A. is nothing fancy as far as interior or service goes. The food however, is absolutely delicious and with a price like that, you wonder where they get a profit. The atmosphere is also interesting and with students sharing tables, it's the perfect opportunity to mix with locals.
