In 1897, a Dutchman by the name of Van Deeterkom took over a bankrupt grocery store at the ‘Groote Postweg' and modified it into a hotel. This marked the birth of the Grand Preanger Hotel. In 1929, the hotel was renovated by the famous Dutch architect, C.P Wolff Schoemaker with the assistance of no less than the future first president of Indonesia , Ir. Sukarno. These days, the Grand Preanger has become a historical landmark of Bandung and one of the most famous odes to the Art Deco era.
The white building that houses the Grand Preanger Hotel is decorated in typical Art Deco style, with a tower surrounded by flowing wings and repeated abstract patterns. The good thing is that its style has always been recognized and maintained during renovations, so the exterior as well as interior still bear the markings of the Art Deco age.
Located in close proximity to Bandung 's historical and business centre, the hotel caters to business travelers and tourists alike. The absolute center of Bandung is right next to the entrance, so there can be little doubt of its central position.
The Preanger‘s lounge is a huge and strikingly elegant space where comfortable seating allows for rendezvous' of all kind. Other than your regular hotel lobby, it is actually quite a pleasure to sit here and look around at the buzzing activities taking place.
The rooms and public spaces have a sense of luxury and timeless elegance that is in stark contrast with other artefacts of the colonial times. They may have history, but only in a very faded and tainted way. The Grand Preanger is well maintained and has a pleasant lively atmosphere. That impression is also nurtured by the friendliness of the staff who welcomes regular guests time and time again.
The Grand Preanger is a 5 star hotel that features all the mod cons one might expect as the in room facilities are all top notch. Add the friendly, professional service and the unique role this hotel has played in history and it becomes clear why this is one of the most renowned hotels in the city.
