The Grand Hotel Lembang is one of the oldest hotels in the Bandung area and was opened by the Dutch in 1926. Since it is a heritage of the colonial times, the Grand Hotel Lembang is also one of the most well known hotels in this area. Unfortunately, the colonial splendour has faded and what remains is a tired building that mostly caters to business events.
The Grand Lembang has 3 stars but most of the facilities are in dire need of a face lift. The 191 rooms are divided over a North and a South wing, and come as standard, superior or Azalea family suites. Each of the rooms are equipped with private bath room, satellite TV, mini bar and hot water. Ceiling fans or a/c aren't available, but since Lembang is located in a mountaineous area one will realize that those luxuries aren't really necessary either. The bungalow style family units have a kitchenette and can accommodate up to 6 persons. All the rooms have a grim atmosphere and outdated furnishings. Not exactly a cheerful environment for a family holiday but for business purposes, it might be functional enough.
By far the most enchanting feature of this hotel is the swimming pool and the nearby @Bistro that seems to have been restored recently. The menu at this open air restaurant offers a wide range of local and Western dishes in a modern setting. Views of the pool, playground, soccer field and mountains in the distance make for a nice backdrop during dinner. At the front of the hotel, two tennis courts allow for some exercise, but again, the state of the gravel reveals its age.
If business is your purpose, the Grand Hotel Lembang probably has some of the most suitable facilities in the area. There are 5 meeting rooms, ranging from the Alamanda convention hall, with a capacity of 1000 persons, to the Melati meeting room, for a maximum of 25 persons.
The Edelweis coffeeshop adjoins the lobby and is equipped with a bar and karaoke. For a touch of the old and bygone, The Grand Resto serves a wide range of European dishes in a room that seems mostly untouched since the opening of the hotel. The original tiled floor and photographs of the colonial era have an elegance and ambience that the rest of the hotel lacks.
Grand Hotel Lembang might have been grand in the past but now it's a drab, functional hotel which is mostly suitable for large groups with business purposes. Remnants of the past in the Grand Resto and nice views at the back of the hotel are its only plus points.
