Selasar Sunaryo Art Space
by: Emma Kwee

Selasar Sunaryo is an Indonesian-born artist who built this gallery in the green hills of Dago, as a dedication to the Indonesian art world. Born in 1943 and studying fine art at ITB, he graduated in 1969. Because he didn't want to limit himself to the use of one particular medium, he branched out to other fields of expertise as well such as sculpting, installation, and painting.

The opening of the Selasar Sunaryo art space in 1998 was a realization of his longstanding dream to create a place for his arts and a center of cultural activities. The gallery is a picturesque building that blends in well with the natural environment. It is not big in size, but the artefacts on display present Sunaryo's work and underlying themes well. There is a daring use of different techniques and materials, which often seem contradictory, and unconsciously makes you think that something is out of order.

For example a piece called Wood, stone and water, that features a large wooden log, with sunken round stones in it, that were filled with water. Somehow the combination of these elements conjures up a picture of clash. That is even more the case when Sunaryo uses computer chips in a depiction of ‘hardware through time', beginning with archaic signal language to the organic material wood, through the fabric of fibers and ending with computer chips at the top. It is apparent that ‘tradition' versus ‘modernity' and ‘natural' versus ‘engineered' are important themes in Sunaryo's life and work.

The open atmosphere of the small gallery and the open-air areas make for a very enjoyable and relaxed cultural experience. The Kopi Selasar cafe at the back of the gallery provides the perfect conclusion that provides ample opportunity for a cup of coffee and some arty chitchat. The gallery is opened daily and entrance is free.
