The Thousand Islands
by: Galuh Wulandarie

Excitement rushed into my veins when I was told to review Thousand Islands. Although I have been living in Jakarta for 25 years, I have never once been to Thousand Islands. “This should be interesting”, I told myself.

The Thousand Islands journey I took is not for those who expect the luxurious and comfort from 5 star hotels. Put that particular brand of expectation inside your drawer, and take out your backpack, fishing hat, and some adventurous courage. This journey is for those wannabe backpackers, passionate about what lies beneath the sea and thrill for a ride (in this case, in a ferry boat) to the wild side! “Ay ay, Captain!”

Thousand Islands, An Overview
Contrary to the name, the region consists only of 105 islands with a total land area of 8.7 km2. All the resort islands in the Marine National Park are open for public. Visitors can enjoy various exciting tourist facilities, such as exclusive hotels and restaurants, underwater aquarium (on Putri Island), tennis courts, golf courses (on Bira Besar Island), jet skis, banana boats, swimming pools, and many others. For those who love a challenge, there are Survival Tour programs in which you and your family and friends will attempt to survive on the island in primordial ways. Strolling on the beach at night, you can also watch nesting behaviors of the Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), giant turtles with beak-like mouths, which are listed in the Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).

Besides the resort islands, you can also find educational and marine conservational activities on Pramuka, Sepa, Rambut and Kotok Besar Islands.  Some of the facilities are:

  • Decorative Coral Reefs Cultivation Area
Here is where tourists and students can learn to cultivate and produce decorative coral reefs in environmentally-friendly ways for export commodities.

  • Mangrove, Seagrass and Coral Reef Conservation Area
This is a place where tourists and students can learn how to conserve and cultivate mangrove, seagrass and coral reefs.
  • Hawksbill Turtle Conservation and Rehabilitation Area

  • Breeding Centers of Food Fish, Kerapu and Large Fish (Napoleon, Barracuda, etc.) and Cultivation Center of Seagrass

  • Center of Rare Species Rehabilitation and Translocation Program
Visitors to this centre can learn about conservation and rehabilitation efforts for bald eagles (Haliastur indes), barking deers (Muntiacus muntjak) and rare butterflies.

  • Information Center of Kepulauan Seribu Marine National Park
Tourists and students can view the Miniature of the National Park, watch documentary films and learn more about managing the unique ecosystem of Marine National Parks all right here.
