Kyooki Bar
by: Emma Kwee

Kyooki bar and Lounge opened in 2004, is a relatively new addition to Bandung 's nightlife, and is at the same time the first real ‘club' on the scene, amidst all bars and discos. When it opened it was mostly visited by a grown up crowd, but over time a regeneration has taken place and now Kyooki is the hangout of the young and restless.

  • The Vibe
Kyooki is a Japanese word meaning ‘ecstasy' in a general sense of elation, and the vibe one gets when entering the club is lively to say the least. From 18.00 till 23.00 the space is used as a lounge, and afterwards the transformation to club gets everybody on their feet till 04.00 am . The dark ambience is divided into a dancefloor with Dj-booth, a bar and several seating areas, seperated by curtains. Not only the name is Japanese, remnants of a Japanese theme can be found in the decoration of red and black and the various events staged with a Japanese topic, such as a ‘Geisha fashion show'.
  • The drinks
Word on the street is that Kyooki serves the best cocktails in town, the most famous (or infamous) one being the Serangan Fajar (Rp.130,000 glass/Rp.550,000 pitcher) a strong concoction of no less than 13 ingredients, of which, judging by the taste, the majority of them have a strong alcoholic component. If you want to be noticed, the thing to order is the Waterfall (Rp.95,000), a drink that ensures a true spectacle and the attention of everybody present. A bottle of liquor is placed on a glass, set alight after which the idea is to drink the heated liquid trough the licking flames with a straw. Unfortunately my straw melted instantly.
In February a cooled Vodka bar will be opened at the back, allowing drinking Vodka in Russian temperatures, which will get the effect kicking in strongly as soon as you leave the cold.
  • The crowd
The crowd that frequents Kyooki are mostly trendy students who have mastered ‘modernity' to the full extent. The 2 resident DJ's Lexa and Scratchy get the party going with the most popular electro tunes of the moment, and the house MC acts keeps up the ambience by giving peptalks throughout the night. Monday's are more exclusive with VIP rooms and models while Wednesday is campusnight and Fridays and Saturdays are the most packed. Overall Kyooki has a celebratory atmosphere to it, with pumping bass lines to shake your booty on the dancefloor or tap your toes while sipping cocktails.

SD's personal take on Kyooki Bar and Lounge
If you are in a party mood and want to witness what Bandung 's young and restless are upto when the sun goes down, this is the place to go. The atmosphere is relaxed yet bubbly and if you're into electro and funky house your eardums will appreciate the boombastic soundscape provided.
